Have you ever wondered why the Qur’an is recited in slightly different ways around the world, whether in Makkah, Cairo, Istanbul, or Jakarta? These differences are not mistakes or changes. They are part of the Qur’an’s divinely preserved tradition, known as qirāʾāt.
For over 1,400 years, Muslims have carried these recitations from teacher to student, generation after generation. They show us the beauty, richness, and universality of the Qur’an, reminding us that Allah’s words were revealed for all people, in every place and time.

Yousef Wahb is a Research Director at Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research, an Islamic Law Instructor at the University of Windsor Faculty of Law and a Family Law and Islamic Finance Author for LexisNexis Canada. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Islamic Studies from Al-Azhar University, a Master of Laws (LL.M) from the University of Windsor, an MA from the University of Chicago Divinity School, and is currently completing his PhD in Islamic law at the University of Chicago Middle Eastern Studies program.
